Nine years ago I could not even turn on a computer. I’m a roofer by trade, and never really had a need for a computer, or so I thought. Blogging is what first led me to wanting to learn all about the the Internet and websites.
I started with a free blog, and soon discovered that I was limited in what I could do. So, I got the bright idea that I would build my own blog from scratch. Here I am, no idea about code, just learned how to “surf” the web, and now I’m going to build a website.
I bought Frontpage, paid for web hosting, and off I went crashing site after site! I’d get something halfway decent and boom! Removed the wrong piece of code… CRASH!
I kept at it and sure enough, after many 18 hour days that turned into months, I figured it out enough to keep my first blog up and running. The next question was: how do I get people to my weblog? With literally millions of blogs screaming through cyberspace for attention, how was I going to get people to my site?
That’s when I first started studying SEO, or Search Engine Optimization. Little did I realize that I was learning skills to help my small roofing repair business.
And that’s just what I did: took a blogging hobby and applied what I had learned to my business website. My roof repair website shows up on the first page for several top keyword phrases. I pay nothing and receive more work than I could ever do! Now I’m building and developing websites for other small businesses, helping others benefit from all that the internet offers.
